Sornay, Haute-Saône

Sornay is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Sornay situated at an altitude of 203 m above sea level, 6 km west of Marnay and about 25 km west-northwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village extends to the south of the department, both sides of the Ruisseau de la Fontaine de Magney on the northern edge of the valley of Ognon, on the southwestern edge of the Monts de Gy.

The area of ​​6.29 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the lower Ognon Valley. The southern boundary runs mostly along the Ognon. This flows here with numerous turns west through a flat area which has a width of about three kilometers and is on average 200 m. It is used primarily for agricultural purposes. From the river, the municipality's area extends northward up through the valley and the adjacent, gently inclined slopes of the Bois du BEGE and the Bois de Bay, which form the south-western foothills of the Monts de Gy. These hills are composed of Tertiary sediments. With 275 meters, the highest elevation of Sornay is achieved in the Bois du BEGE. History

In the Middle Ages Sornay belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. A noble family named Sornay is occupied in the 12th and 13th centuries. After the barony Choye held the local rule before Sornay came to Bauffremont family in the 15th century. Together with the Franche -Comté Sornay came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. The settlement spells belonged to the monastery Corneux, whose abbot in 1678 founded a blast furnace here. Since 2002 Sornay is a member of the 15 localities municipal association Communauté de communes de la Vallée de l' Ognon.

Attractions

The village church of Sornay was rebuilt in the 19th century, while the tower is from the 13th century from the previous building. For the rich interior includes numerous statues dating from the 15th/16th. Century and a pulpit in the Louis XIV style.

Population

With 307 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Sornay is one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1906 354 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Sornay was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village while had settled metal manufacturing in the spell. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger towns in the area and agglomeration in Besançon.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Marnay by Pesmes. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 15 km. Further road links exist with Pagney, Chancey and Bay.
