Sovetsky, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug

Sovetsky (Russian Советский ) is a town in western Siberia, in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District / Yugra (Russia) with 26 495 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the west Sovetsky of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, between the Ob River and the Ural Mountains in the West Siberian Plain. The climate is continental.

Sovetsky is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1969 Ivdel - Priobje; the name of the station is Werchnekondinskaja ( Верхнекондинская ). Here a branch line branches off to Agirisch.

Four kilometers south of the city has an airport.

History

The place as well as a forestry operation was in 1963 during the construction of the railway line Ivdel - Priobje and immediately received the status of an urban-type settlement. In 1997 the settlement was granted town rights.

Culture and sights

In Sovetsky there since 1985 Rajon museum and exhibition center with a focus on archeology, ethnography and modern history of the area.

Economy and infrastructure

The main industries are petroleum production, mainly operated by the company Lukoil belonging Uraineftegas ( Урайнефтегаз ), and forestry ( Советсклес, Sowetskles ).

Near Sovetsky is since 1986 a 350 meter high radio mast for FM and TV.
