Staritsa, Staritsky District, Tver Oblast

Stariza (Russian Старица ) is a town in Tver Oblast (Russia) with 8607 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Valdai Hills about 75 kilometers southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Tver at the mouth of the eponymous river Stariza into the Volga.

Stariza is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

Twelve kilometers away from the city is its railway station on the opened on this section 1878 railway Lichoslawl - Torzhok - Rzhev - Wjasma ( kilometer 93).

History

The village was founded in 1297 as a fortress Novy gorod (Russian for New City, also known as Gorodok na Starize / town on the Stariza or Wyssoki Gorodok / High town ).

In the late 14th century, the name Stariza a naturalized. 1485 was the place with the Principality of Tver to the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

1775 the municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) was awarded. In the 18th and 19th centuries Stariza is an important pier at the waterway between the Volga and Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

During World War II Stariza was occupied on 12 October 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 1 January 1942 by troops of the Kalinin Front Red Army as part of the Kalinin operation.

Culture and sights

Stariza is one of the best preserved towns in the western part of Russia. Here is the complex was founded in the 12th century Assumption Monastery ( Успенский монастырь / Uspenski monastyr ) with the Assumption Church ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja Tserkov ) of 1530, the Trinity Cathedral ( Троицкий собор / Troitsky Sobor ) Dormition of the Temple Church ( Введенская церковь / Wwedenskaja Tserkov ) of 1570 and the Apostle John's Church ( церковь Иоанна Богослова / Tserkov Ioanna Bogoslowa ) of 1594 and the monks' cells tract and other buildings. Furthermore, in the city are the Paraskeva Friday Church ( церковь Параскевы Пятницы / Tserkov Paraskewy Pjatnizy ) of 1750, the Boris and Gleb Cathedral ( Борисоглебский собор / Borissoglebski Sobor ) from 1808 to 1820, the Church of the Redeemer ( Спасская церковь / Spasskaja Tserkov ) with bell tower from 1827 and further obtained.

The city has a museum of local history.

In the surroundings of the former noble country seats Pavlovsk, Malinniki and Bernowo lie. In the latter, which belonged to the Wulfow family, a Pushkin museum.
