Udomlya

Udomlya (Russian Удомля; Troiza to 1904, Russ Троица ) is a Russian city in the Tver Oblast, Central Russia. It is the administrative seat of Rajons Udomlya and has 31,061 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geographical location

The town lies in the valley of Wyschni Wolotschok on the banks of Peswo and the Udomlya Lake, which are connected by a channel. Udomlya located approximately 290 km north- west of Moscow and 225 km north-west of the regional center of Tver.

History

Already in 1485 Udomelski Pogost was mentioned as volost of the Archbishops of Novgorod. The exact meaning of the name is not clear but is probably Baltic origin. Today's settlement, however, was until 1869 when the railway station Troiza ( in German " Trinity " ) on the railway route Rybinsk - Ventspils. In 1904 the place its present name. Since 1981 Udomlya has city rights.

Economy and Transport

Since the beginning of the 20th century Udomlya is a center of wood processing. Also is the production of food ( dairy giant, and others) is of significance for the urban industry. The nuclear power plant Kalinin ( Kalininskaja, commissioning in 1984 ) is located northeast of the city on Udomlya Lake and has a total capacity of 4,000 megawatts.
