Stone ( called 1951-1994 officially stone ( Toggenburg ) ) until December 31, 2012, a municipality and village in the Toggenburg in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. On January 1, 2013 Stone was merged with the municipality Nesslau -Krummenau the new community Nesslau. The place has its name from the castle Starkenstein.

Geography

The former municipality has an area of km ² and 382 inhabitants 12:24 ( 31 December 2010 ). By stone flows the Wissthur, which at the lowest point of the former township on 830 m above sea level. M. empties into the Rhine.

Destroyed by fire in 1947

On March 29, 1947 approximately at 13.15 clock, it was discovered, as rise from the restaurant steers in stone smoke. After some time the fire brigade rushed Nesslau with a fire engine, but could do nothing. Soon also met firefighters from Ebnat Kappel, Wattwil, St. Gallen, Buchs and Rapperswil. The "Gasthaus spear " and the new Milchzentrale were rescued, two farms near burned down, however. People came to no harm, however, not all animals are rescued from the stables.

On the following Palm Sunday, a relief committee was established, the same day already collected a substantial sum and kind. The country-wide fundraising campaign brought a total of 930,000 francs, of which about 670,000 francs was used for houses and housing equipment and the rest for a new water supply.

Beginning of skiing

Already at the beginning of the 20th century, the beginning of skiing in Toggenburg was made to Stein am Häderenberg. A local carpenter made ​​the first skis ago. By the year 2001, the ski lift Eggli was operated. Today, stone is a popular starting point for ski tourers. A popular destination is the Stockberg.
