The underground station Stuttgart Schwab street in the city district of Stuttgart - West west of downtown is at the end of the first phase of construction of the Stuttgart junction line. At the station end several lines of the S -Bahn Stuttgart. An operational feature is a 1.5 km long turning loop at the end of the station.

History

In the planning of the Stuttgart S-Bahn train station was planned as a temporary end of the 3.2 km long tunnel downtown. In the first stage of operation of the S -Bahn was expected 30,000 passengers per day, in the second stage of operation ( with the extension to Böblingen and to the airport) with about 35,000.

The station was part of the first design contract for S -Bahn, which was closed in 1971. The construction contract for the structural work was awarded in 1974 to a consortium of companies Holzmann (Frankfurt am Main ), Baresel (Stuttgart) and Hochtief ( food). The building turned out to be very costly due to the ascended from the pit of mining construction of the turning loop. The building shell was completed in December 1977. In 1978, the first phase of the connection train from the main station to Schwabstraße in operation. In 1985 he was an extension to the southwest to the university. However, part of trains ends continue in Schwabstraße station and then passes through the turning loop.

Facilities

The station is located on level -2 of 11 to 27 m below the road surface, with a holding located in 6 to 8 meters deep water table.

The station has one 210 m long and 8.80 m wide central platform with two platform edges. It lies in a longitudinal slope of 1.6 per thousand. Track 1 is the conquest of the university and the ending in Schwabstraße trains, track 2 the trains to the main station. Access to the platform located on both platforms. At the western end of the platform to the tracks branch off towards the university and turning loop.

On the level above -1 are output structures.

Wendeschleife

The station has a rare on railways operating characteristic: a 1.51 km long turning loop. They threaded with 0.0 kilometer south of the platform area ( 2.6 km ) from the track direction Vaihingen and single track runs over a length of 1.0 km. This is followed by a 300m-long double-track section follows, which receives an evasive and siding of 210 m working length. At kilometer 1.3 of the double-track section begins. Single track threads the route followed by a direction Central Station.

The overlap is between 17 m in the vicinity of the platforms and 80 m below the Westbahnhof. Given the numerous trains there applied for a turning loop was despite the higher cost of building economic found to be blunt-ended underground turning tracks. With the turn loop should also be contemplated over a two-track railway siding facility turning a Mindestzugfolgezeit of 1.2 minutes ( 2.5 minutes compared with otherwise ) can be achieved. The loop should also be able to record, five instead of two long trains. With a shorter turnaround time in which neither driver position change even brake tests were required, should be within the intended operating program, a total of three full trains can be saved. In addition, the division was into several single-track tunnel tubes opposite the railway siding turning system as structurally simple and economical.

While the platform area of the station Schwabstraße was created in an open design, the loop was drilled by mining. On October 7, 1974, the propulsion of the loop and the construction of branching structures and of initially at 60 m long tunnel stumps of the two single-track tunnels of the rabbit mountain tunnel in the direction Gäubahn began. ( The remaining rabbits mountain tunnel direction Vaihingen was built in 1979 and went into operation in 1985. )

The tunnel was excavated in New Austrian Tunneling Method with two roadheader with its full cross-section of 50 m² ( single track in the area ) to 120 m² ( junction area). The ground was frozen so.

The front part of the turning loop is leached Gypsum Keuper. Because this is fragile and the coverage is low here, the rock above the tunnel roof in a steady position by means of freezing process. Geological problems in the back of the turning loop was the situation in anhydrithaltigen Gipskeuper layers, strong swell on contact with water, which is unavoidable in conventional tunneling method and thus exert strong forces on the tunnel body.

To avoid swelling of the unleached Gypsum Keuper, the turning loop was driven completely dry. The tunnel cross-section has a clear radius of 4 m, which is followed by a 1 m thick tunnel lining. In operation, are not caused by the anhydrite damage occurred (as of 2003).

When measuring the turning loop 40 measuring points were used. Because otherwise there is no connection to the surface, the sole basis of the survey was the station Schwabstraße. After a tunneling length of 850 m and 900 m, turn left right in the breakdown took place under the Western Railway; the cross error amounted to 8 mm, height 2 mm error. The tunnel profile has an inner diameter of 6.70 m and 9.80 m in the single-track double track area. The radius of the loop is 190 m, the length of 1500 m.
