History

A testimony of the population history of Surcasti are the finds from the Bronze Age, which are now preserved in the Rhaetian Museum in Chur. Also in Crestaulta at Surin items were found from the Bronze Age. It is possible that there is a connection between the settlement in Crestaulta and the finds in Surcasti.

The history of the village in the early Middle Ages is unknown to a large extent. From the Carolingians, we know that they appreciated the whole Damphreux as fertile valley, the interest earned as much as the fertile Domleschg. In the later Middle Ages, the Bishop of Chur owned large parts of the Lugnezes. The Bailiwick of these areas had the barons of Belmont, after the extinction of the Counts of Sax - Misox.

On a rocky promontory between Valserrhein and Glenner is the tower of the former castle Surcasti, adjacent to it, the late Gothic St. Lorenz Church, which was first mentioned in 1345.
