Svínoy

Svinoy [ svʊinɔi ] / [ svʊinɪ ] (literally: pig island, Danish: Svinø ) is one of 18 islands in the Faroe Islands and belongs to the geographical region of the six northern islands. At the same time it has the status of an " outer island " (see Útoyggjar ).

History

In 1860, there were 90 residents on Svinoy, 1911 there were 187 and 1921, the population was 204 people. The school was built in 1888. On 1 October 1918 the post office was opened. In place Svinoy lived more than 200 people in the 1960s. Since 2009 Svinoy is part of the municipality Klaksvík.

Attractions

The Church of Svinoy dates from 1878, where the grave of the big farmers Svínoyar - Bjarni is suspected, who lived here and is mentioned in the Faroese. Transport links

Cars do not drive on Svinoy, only a few commercial vehicles. You can see the island on the well-maintained roads and paths easy to explore on foot.
