Action
Joe Chapin is a respected lawyer in town Gibbs Ville in Pennsylvania. He is married to wealthy he Edith Chapin, the energetic his social advancement operates, but he goes along with discomfort and hesitant. With the help of their wealth and influence they tried every means to elect Joe in the office of lieutenant governor.
In order to preserve the family's reputation, prevents Edith that her son Joby leaves the boarding school for a career as a jazz musician. Joby enters the army. As the daughter of Ann by the young musician Charley Bongiorno becomes pregnant and marries him in secret, her mother causes on their political relationship network with Mike Slattery and Lloyd Williams, Charley can annul the marriage and he leaves her. Anne has a miscarriage and leaves her parents disappointed in the direction of New York.
When the party leaders learned of the affair, they fear for the election and drop Joe, who lays down his candidacy. It comes to a dispute between Edith and Joe, in which she accuses him of incompetence. He learns from a previous love affair with his wife, Lloyd. Joe drowns his sorrows in alcohol. To get back in touch with his daughter, he travels to New York. He learns the young Kate Drummond know that is a roommate of his daughter. Both fall in love. As a sign of his love he gives Kate an old family heirloom, a ruby . When he noticed that people look at him as their father, he ended the relationship because he sees no future due to the large age difference.
His years of alcohol consumption eventually destroyed his health. But Joe refused medical help. Ann returns when she learns that her father is dying. From his daughter, who knows nothing of the affair with Kate, he learns shortly before his death that Kate still loves him despite her upcoming wedding. During the funeral Joby blames his mother and their political friends of the demise of his father. Ann helps Kate in the wedding preparations and finds in her the ruby of her father. She learns of the happy time of her father with Kate.

Background
For writer-director Philip Dunne it was the only collaboration with lead actor Gary Cooper. Originally Spencer Tracy was provided for the lead role, but canceled the order to take over the title role in The Last Hurrah.
The 20th Century Fox brought the Cinemascope film in 1958 in the West German cinemas. In this modern common Gary Cooper was dubbed the voice of Paul Klinger.
