The Buccaneer (1958 film)

King of the buccaneers is an American pirate movie by Anthony Quinn in the year 1958. During the 1959 Academy Awards, the film was in the "Best Costume Design" nominated in the category. The first and only directorial effort Quinns is a remake of the film The buccaneers of Louisiana in the year 1938.

Action

The pirate Jean Laffite rules over a small island in the Mississippi estuary ahead of New Orleans. When the United States in 1812 seeking independence, Britain sends vessels to attack the port city. The American General Jackson wants to deploy his soldiers to Lafitte's Island in order to defend the city better. The inhabitants of the small island but symphatisieren with the British and want to ally with them. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Lafitte in the heart certainly is American and has been in Annette, the daughter of the governor of Louisiana, William Claiborne, in love.

Background

Cecil B. DeMille was with King of the privateer a remake of his own movie Turn The buccaneers of Louisiana. Since DeMille's health deteriorated but strong, he handed the directing at his former son- Anthony Quinn, who in 1938 played the role of Beluche. The premiere of the film took place on 1 December 1958 DeMille died a few weeks later in January 1959.

Reviews

The magazine Cinema described the film as " dramatically often awkward and sentimental ." The lexicon of international film ruled: " broadly played, with minimal stress. Attention should be paid to the sense of unusual color effects. "

Nominations

Ralph Jester, Edith Head and John Jensen were nominated at the Academy Awards in 1959 for "Best Costume Design".
