Therwil

Therwil (Basel German: Därwyl ) is a municipality in the district of Arlesheim in the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland.

Geography

Therwil located in Leimental on the western edge of the wood brother and is connected by tram line 10 of the Basel Land transport ( BLT) with the city of Basel. Its neighboring municipalities are Aesch, Reinach, Oberwil, Biel- Benken, Witterswil and Ettingen. The area of the municipality is 763 hectares, of which 50 % agricultural land, 26 % forest and 24% settlements.

History

Therwil was settled very early, since they found numerous testimonies from the Stone Age, Roman and early medieval period as a burial ground and a pottery kiln. For the first time in 1223 Therwil was mentioned as Terwilre, which transferred from the Counts of Thierstein in the monastery of Reichenau. 1518 bought by the Bishop of Basel the village and in 1525 it was added to the castle law of the city of Basel. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was looted several times and after the French Revolution came to Therwil Raurachischen Republic. From 1792 to 1815 it was under French rule and became part of the canton of Basel Congress of Vienna. 1887, after the opening of Birsigtalbahn the village had a direct link with the city of Basel. Common gender in Therwil are Gutzwiller, Heini and Gschwind. A well-known inhabitant was the revolutionary Stephan Gutzwiller, the head of the revolt that led to the Basel Canton separation and establishing the canton of Basel -Landschaft.

Population

33 % of the population are Roman Catholic, reformed 32%. The proportion of foreigners is 15% (as of 31 January 2011).

Sports

The Baseball Club of Therwil that Therwil Flyers, is eight times Swiss champion. The handball club HC Therwil belongs together with partner associations from Oberwil and Binningen of the biggest clubs in the North West Switzerland. Under the label HSG Leimental the inter-regional teams are listed. Last year, several big successes were celebrated. Next there is the Volleyball Club VB Therwil, which belongs to the biggest volleyball clubs in the Basel region. There is also the FC Therwil. The first team plays since 2011 for the first time in the 2nd league interregional. The fourth major sports club in the league, athletics club Therwil, which is already could claim a few times with his athletes at the Swiss Championships applies. The Jungwacht St. Stephan Therwil is the second oldest band of Switzerland and the blue ring was (at that time still under the name Imeldaverein ) one of the first Swiss youth organizations in this style.
