Tivat

Tivat (Cyrillic Тиват; Italian Teodo ) is a town in Montenegro. It lies on the Bay of Kotor and has about 9,500 inhabitants (2003 ). The eponymous municipality has 14,000 inhabitants.

The city has an airport, which is about three kilometers away. Furthermore, the city has a new yacht harbor called Porto Montenegro ( formerly was an old shipyard ).

History

Between 1420 and 1797 Tivat belonged to the Republic of Venice from 1815 to 1918 for Austria -Hungarian Empire. 1919 was the area of ​​the Bay of Kotor and Tivat thus also to the newly formed Yugoslavia.

Because of its strategic location at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor Tivat until 1918 was heavily occupied by Austria -Hungarian troops had to occupy the surrounding existing today fortifications. In garrison here were the III. Battalion of Infantry RGMT. No. 72, the I. Battalion of Infantry RGMT. No. 91 and the rod and the I. Battalion of the fortress artillery regiment No. 5

Population

At the 2011 census, the municipality of Tivat had 14,031 inhabitants, of whom described themselves 4,666 ( 33.25% ) and Montenegrins, 4,435 ( 31.61 %) than Serbs and 2,304 ( 16.42% ) and Croats. Besides living in the community are other smaller groups. 1,275 inhabitants ( 9.09% ) did not specify ethnicity.
