Torpes (Doubs)

Torpes is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Torpes is located at 260 m, about 12 km southwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located on the western edge of the Jura, on a terrace above a bend of the Doubs River, across from Thoraise.

The area of ​​5.55 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals. The eastern boundary runs along the Doubs, the multi-turn here flows through a wide Talniederung south. From the river, the municipality's area extends westward across the flat alluvial plain and the adjacent escarpment, which is usually 20 to 40 m high and is partially marked by rocks, up to the terrace of Torpes. This is followed in the West a gently undulating landscape with forest areas ( Bois du Gîte) and arable or meadow land on. In the far south of the municipality of soil ranges on a spur of the height of the Grand Bois, at the 350 m the highest elevation reached by Torpes.

To Torpes the hamlet Piroulette part (255 m) on the plateau north of the Doubstals. Neighboring communities of Torpes are Velesmes - Dessessart and Grand Fontaine in the north, Thoraise in the east, and Boussières Osselle in the south and Routelle in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Torpes formed its own rule, which came into the possession of the reign Thoraise 1333. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Until his death at the guillotine in 1793 was Torpes in the possession of Louis Marie Florent de Lomont d' Haraucourt, duc du Châtelet.

Attractions

The village church was built in the 18th century in classical style. The Torpes castle on the edge of the plateau, which was originally from the 13th and 14th century, but burned down in 1492, was rebuilt on the ruins of the medieval building from 1735. It is now privately owned.

With 972 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Torpes is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the area of ​​390-470 people, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1970s.
