Tvøroyri

Tvøroyri [ TVO ɹɔiɹɪ ː ] ( Danish name: Tverå ) is the capital of Suðuroy ( Faroe Islands ). The same Faroese municipality with about 2000 inhabitants, the largest on Suðuroy and fourth largest in the archipelago.

Overview

Tvøroyri has a fishing and trading port and a good infrastructure as capital of the island. Among other things, here are a hotel, local museum, one of the four pharmacies in the Faroe Islands and the hospital of Suðuroy.

Tvøroyri one of the places in the Faroe Islands, which have no street names. Today it forms with the neighboring towns and Trongisvágur Froðba a local urban center along the protected fjord Trongisvágsfjørður.

Tvøroyri is the latest place to Suðuroy. It was only in 1836 after the Danish trade monopoly established a store here. Sights are the characteristic church and behind her towering pillars basalts (photo). These formations are in this kind of unusual for the Faroe Islands.

Every two years ( odd years numbers of even-numbered years in Vágur otherwise ) can be found here at June 24, instead of around the festival Jóansøka. It is a sport, culture and music festival and summit of the year on Suðuroy.

Port and transport

The Port of Tvøroyri is protected in the Trongisvágsfjørður and has a depth of 7 meters. He is next to the Vágur of the most important port of Suðuroy. 13 vessels with a total tonnage of 4243 gross tons have their home port here. Twelve of them are fishing vessels ( as of 2002). Attractions

Personalities

The former Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Jóannes Eidesgaard comes from Tvøroyri and was here long teacher. Now he lives in the capital Tórshavn. One of his predecessors comes from - how many Social Democrats - also from here: Atli Pætursson Dam ( 1932-2005 ). Another Prime Minister was Kristian Djurhuus (1895-1984), who is not born here, but lived most of his life.

The captain of the Faroese national football team, Óli Johannesen, on the other hand, despite the cumbersome transportation, remained here and playing in the club TB Tvøroyri.

The graphic designer and famous stamp designer Anker Eli Petersen has chosen to relocate to Denmark.

The young pop star Brandur Enni has lived since his birth here.
