Twenterand

( Listen? / I ) Twenterand is a municipality in the Netherlands, Overijssel province. Their total area is 118.1 km ². She had on 1 January 2013, according to the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek 33 966 inhabitants.

The municipality includes the villages of Vriezenveen as the seat of the municipal administration, Den Ham, Vroomshoop, Bruinehaar, Geerdijk and Wester -Vriezenveensewijk.

Location and economic

The municipality is located north of Almelo in a bog. It is crossed by the railway Mariënberg - Almelo with several stops. Almelo and Nijverdal are nearby centers. The village contains many farmers and commuters who work in Almelo live. Further, all villages have a commercial area with several dozen small industrial and commercial establishments.

History

Den Ham originated in the Middle Ages on the trade Almelo Ommen. It was known in the 17th century because of its many hostels. Den Ham has remained a traditional farming village.

Vriezenveen originated in the Middle Ages, when the lord of the castle Almelo let colonize its location here lands of friezes. They put high moor dry to reduce peat. A remnant of the old bog " Engbertsdijksvenen " is still preserved as a nature reserve. It can be visited from time to time with a nature guide.
