Tyresö Municipality

Tyresö is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish Stockholm County and the historic province of Södermanland. The main town of the municipality is Bollmora.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Baltic Sea coast and has a share in the archipelago of Stockholm. The area was shaped by the last ice age with low hills and trough-like valleys which are rich in lakes. In the south there are jungle-like areas that are partially protected as a nature reserve. With 84 meters above the sea Telegrafberget is the highest point of the municipality.

Tyresö bordered to the north by the municipalities of Stockholm and Nacka, to the south Haninge, Huddinge, and to the west by the east by Värmdö.

History

The first people arrived 3,000 years ago in the area of the municipality, but there were permanent settlements only from the 7th century. In the 14th century an estate that dominated three centuries later, large parts of today's Stockholm County was formed. During this time, Gabriel Oxenstierna had built the castle and the church of Tyresö.

Due to the energy flows between the many lakes Tyresö developed into an industrial center near Stockholm. There were mills, rolling mills, forges, paper mills, sawmills and brickyards. None of these factories is preserved. Only the mill of Uddby was rebuilt after 1895 to a hydroelectric plant, which today is the only facility of its kind in the Stockholm area.

At the beginning of the 20th century, large parts of the estate were divided and converted to areas with summer houses. In the fifties emerged in the main town Bollmora larger residential areas in connection with the Swedish million program. During this period, the population of the town grew from 5,000 to over 40,000.
