United Nations Security Council Resolution 1741

Resolution 1741 of the UN Security Council is a resolution to the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea, adopted unanimously on 30 January 2007 at its 5626th meeting of the United Nations Security Council. With the resolution, the mandate of United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea ( UNMEE) has been extended until 31 July 2007.

The Security Council invoked its previous resolutions and statements on the conflict, and in particular resolutions 1320 (2000), 1430 (2002), 1466 (2002), 1640 (2005), 1681 (2006) and 1710 (2006) and emphasized its commitment to the Algiers Agreements, and the importance of immediate implementation of the decision of the demarcation Commission (Eritrea - Ethiopia boundary Commission, EEBC, document S/2002/423 ) as the basis for peace and cooperation between the two sides.

The Panel expressly confirms the integrity of the Temporary Security Zone ( TSZ ), with the Ceasefire Agreement ( S/2000/601 document ) has been agreed and calls on all parties to abide by the commitments made . Furthermore, the resolution underlines the willingness of the Security Council with regard to the finality and binding force of decisions of the borderline Commission, which both sides had agreed and expressed his disappointment over the fact that the demarcation Commission on the grounds that from the report of the UN Secretary-General 22 January 2007 ( document S/2007/33 ) are called.

Taking into account the report of the Secretary-General of 22 January 2007 and his special report of 15 December 2006 (document S/2006/992 ), the Security Council decided to extend the mission of UNMEE until 31 July 2007, with the military component of 2,300 is reduced to 1,700 members. The maximum thickness, which was established by resolution 1320 (2000) and later by the Council resolutions 1430 (2002) and 1681 (2006) was modified, has not changed, however, the Security Council in order to ensure a sufficient military force.

The Security Council again demanded explicitly of Ethiopia that, under Article 5 of resolution 1640 ( 2005) accepted the decisions of the Commission and demarcation of the EEBC immediately makes it possible to mark the boundary correctly in its full course. From Eritrea, the Panel called for the immediate withdrawal of its troops from the TSZ and that Eritrea without any conditions or withdraws from restrictions that hamper the EEBC concerning freedom of movement at work. At the same time there is criticism that the process of demarcation of the border is not progressing.

The resolution requested the Secretary-General to enter into its next report in April 2007 on the implementation of the resolution.
