United Nations Security Council Resolution 1746

Resolution 1746 of the UN Security Council is a resolution on the situation in Afghanistan, which the United Nations Security Council on 23 March 2007 at its 5645th meeting unanimously adopted.

With the resolution the Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan ( UNAMA ) for the period of one year, until 23 March 2008.

The Security Council appealed to its previous resolutions on Afghanistan, and particularly at the resolution 1662 (2006), extended the mandate upon the report of the Secretary-General on 7 March 2006 (document S/2006/145 ) until 23 March 2007, had been, as well as resolution 1659 (2006). The Body issued its decision was based and the report of its fact-finding mission, which took place between the 11th and 16th November 2006 ( document S/2006/935 ).

With the resolution of the Security Council underlined its position on the sovereignty to help independence, territorial integrity and national unity and his will, to the Afghan people in rebuilding the country and the constitutional democracy.

The Council underlined the need for the implementation of the Afghanistan Compact and the Resolution 1659 (2006) and the necessary involvement of the United Nations in coordinating the partnership between Afghanistan and the international community. He stressed the need for coordination of the activities of UNAMA and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF ).

The Security Council again expressed its concern over the situation in Afghanistan, particularly in terms of the growing violence and terrorism by the Taliban, al -Qaida, illegal armed units and involved in drug trafficking groups and the integration of terrorist activities linked to drug trafficking. He also called upon the importance of the Kabul Declaration of 22 December 2002 (document S/2002/1416 ) on good-neighborly relations in memory and welcomed the statement from New Delhi, on the second regional conference for economic cooperation with Afghanistan on 19 November 2006. was adopted. He underlined the importance of regional cooperation for security and development in Afghanistan.

With the resolution of the Security Council also called on its resolutions 1265 (1999), 1296 (2000), 1674 (2006) and 1738 (2006) on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, and 1325 (2000) on the role of women in peace and security.

The panel underlined the resolution that UNAMA will continue its central and impartial role in guiding the activities of the international community in Afghanistan;

After the adoption of the resolution of the representative of Italy stated in Parliament that the Afghan people and the staff of UNAMA needed a signal of strong international support and that the unanimous adoption of the resolution is such a signal. The text was not "business as usual ", but lays down the priorities for the next few months.
