United Nations Security Council Resolution 1739

The resolution 1739 of the UN Security Council is a resolution on the situation in Côte d'Ivoire, the Council unanimously adopted on 10 January 2007 at its 5617th meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

With the resolution, the mandate of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire ( UNOCI ) and their supporting army of France was extended under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations until 30 June 2007.

The resolution followed up on the previous decision of the Security Council to, resolution 1721, in particular to the will, until 31 October 2007 to hold parliamentary elections in Ivory Coast. The Security Council also relied on all previous relevant resolutions, in particular Security Council resolution 1712 on the situation in Liberia and confirmed its commitment to the recognition of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Côte d'Ivoire and called on the importance of good neighborly relations, non-interference and the regional co-operation in memory.

The Security Council expressed on the report of the UN Secretary-General dated 4 December 2006 ( S/2006/939 document ) concern about the persistence of the crisis and the humanitarian situation of refugees and IDPs, and described the situation as a threat to international peace in the region.

Under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, the Security Council decided

The mandate of UNOCI, has been modified by the resolution, thus has the following scope:

  • Monitoring the cessation of hostilities and the movement of armed groups
  • Disarmament, repatriation, reintegration and resettlement of former militiamen
  • Disarmament and dismantling of militias
  • Implementation of the identification of the population and preparation of voters lists
  • Reform of the security forces
  • Monitoring of the arms embargo
  • Support humanitarian operations
  • Help rebuild the government and the authorities
  • Assistance in the preparation of the elections
  • Assistance in the Field of Human Rights
  • Public relations
  • Establishment and maintenance of public order and the law
