Urraca of Castile, Queen of Portugal

Urraca of Castile (* 1186 o 1187 Coimbra, † November 3, 1220 Lisbon ) was a princess of Castile and from 1211 until her death Queen of Portugal.

Urraca was born as the daughter of King Alfonso VIII of Castile and his wife, Eleanor Plantagenet ( nee English princess, daughter of King Henry II of England). Urraca had nine siblings, including Berenguela of Castile, Blanche of Castile, Eleanor of Castile and Henry I of Castile.

1208 she married the Portuguese heir to the throne, who in 1211 when Alfonso II ascended the throne. This Urraca was as a wife, but not as a sovereign in its own right queen.

She had political influence over the king and promoted various orders including the Franciscans and Dominicans.

Not to be confused she is with her great-grandmother Urraca of León and Castile (1080-1126), who was from 1106 to 1126 reigning queen of Castile and León.
