Valandovo

Valandovo ( Macedonian Валандово ) is a city in southeastern Macedonia in the region Bojmija. The city is the seat of Valandovo Opština same name.

Geography

Valandovo is situated in the southern slopes of Plawusgebirges in southeastern Macedonia, near the border with Greece and Bulgaria. Anská reka - through the town tributary of the Vardar flows.

History

For the first time, the city is mentioned in a document of Prince Stefan Uroš IV Dušan on June 12, 1349 under the name Alawandow.

The Ottoman writer Evliya Çelebi describes Valandovo in his travel book ( Seyahatname ) as a city with a small number of Muslims. In the 16th century Valandovo center of a nâhiya in the Kaza Petrich. According to Ottoman statistics ( ethnography of Vilayets d' Adrianople, de Monastir et de Salonique ) from 1873 lived in Valandovo around 120 families.

On December 7, 1899 Valandovo affair took place, in which more than 250 members of the BMARK from the region were arrested for revolutionary activity.

End of May 2009, the region was shaken by Valandovo by earthquakes. The strongest, at 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded near Valandovo, but only led to material damage.
