Vasilijs Stepanovs

Vasily Stepanov Matveyitch (Russian Василий Матвеевич Степанов, Latvian Vasilijs Stepanov; * December 27, 1927 in Leningrad, † April 8, 2011 ) was a Soviet weightlifter.

Career

Vasily Stepanov went at a young age for the Soviet Navy and was stationed in Riga. There he began as a member of Dinamo Riga with the weight lifting. After prolonged training, he reached 1951 335 kg in the Olympic triathlon. In 1953 he first participated at the Soviet Championships and finished equal with 377.5 kg an excellent 2nd place in the middleweight division. Later, he grew up in the light heavyweight (up to 82.5 kg of body weight) into it. In the mid- 1950s the hitherto unchallenged standing at the head of the Soviet Leichtschwergewichtler Trofim Lomakin got problems with the association, he came at the World Championships in 1955 and the Olympics in 1956 for use where it both times second place behind the then seemingly invincible applicable U.S. Americans Thomas Kono finished. Vasily Stepanov was active until 1963 and occupied especially in the Soviet Championships, a whole range of excellent placements.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he opted for Latvia, participated in the nationality and name Vasilijs Stepanov.
