Vaucluse (Doubs)

Vaucluse is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Vaucluse is located at 500 m, 8 km west of Maîche and about 29 km south of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the Jura, deposited in a basin of Ruisseau de Vaucluse, the only east opens to the Valley of Dessoubre, below the plateau of Belleherbe.

The area of ​​5.01 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the valley of Vaucluse, which has a diameter of about 1 to 1.5 km at the top. In the south, west and north of this valley is flanked by nearly 200 m high cliffs, crowned at the top in various places of the rocks of a rugged limestone layer. The parish boundary runs mostly along the top edge. With 704 m is reached on the high area of ​​Belleherbe the highest elevation of Vaucluse.

Drained the valley of Vaucluse by the Ruisseau de Vaucluse, the gorge-like eintieft located below the village in the area before it flows into the Dessoubre. History

The territory of Vaucluse was inhabited very early, which could be confirmed by archaeological finds (bones, Silexsteine ​​) from the Palaeolithic in the cave of Vaucluse.

In the early 6th century monks founded the monastery of Saint- Maurice in the canton of Valais in the valley of Vaucluse, a Benedictine priory. The monks settled here were responsible for the clearing and cultivation of the area. Next to the monastery over time was the village of Vaucluse. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The present shape and fabric of the former monastery of Vaucluse mainly derives from the 17th century. Today, the convent building was the seat of a Medical Education Centre. In the village are farmhouses in the traditional style of the Franche -Comté are from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Population

With 115 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Vaucluse is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1911 307 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded in recent years.
