Viktor Kapitonov

Viktor Arsenjewitsch Kapitonov (Russian Виктор Арсеньевич Капитонов; born October 25, 1933, Kalinin, † 1 March 2005 in Moscow) was a Soviet cyclist.

Life

Twice Viktor Kapitonov participated in Olympic Games: 1956 in Melbourne, he finished in the road race course 33; 1960 reached Viktor Kapitonov the Olympic gold medal in the road race and bronze in the team time trial. He took part in seven of the Peace Race. In his first start in 1957, he won three stages and was third overall of the race. In 1958, he was best climber and won three stages. In 1961 he was runner-up. The UCI Road World Championships in 1963, he finished with the team of the USSR finished third in the team time trial. Twice - in 1958 and 1959 - he also became Soviet champion in the road race.

After his athletic career Kapitonov was the coach of the Soviet cycling team. Among his proteges was Sergei Nikolayevich Suchorutschenkow, which was 20 years after his Olympic gold medalist in the road race.
