Vižinada

Vižinada (Italian Visinada ) is a village and municipality in Istria County, Croatia.

The community Vižinada consists of 23 hamlets with a total of 1158 inhabitants ( according to 2011 census ). The actual historical district Vižinada counted 279 inhabitants.

History

Even in the era of antiquity was located below the present Vižinada in the Mirna valley settlement Ružar, which was probably inhabited until the 15th century, before its inhabitants settled in Vižinada. Vižinada itself is first mentioned in 1177 in a charter of the Bishop of Poreč, whose foundation is however back further decades.

Vižinada fell in 1523 under the rule of the Venetians and was dominated by the Grimani family until the fall of the Venetian Empire in the late 18th century and managed.

Attractions

In the 11th century, situated on the west of Vižinada Božje field (present-day cemetery), first built a church. In 1119 there have founded a monastery the Templars. Until the violent dissolution of the Templar Order in the early 14th century the monastery became the center of the Knights Templar of Istria. The monastery was taken over by the following Order of Malta and in 1526 by the Franciscans of the Third Order. The still existing church of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates from around the 15th century. The ceiling in the sanctuary as well as large sections of the walls are painted with evangelist symbols, with angels and apostles representations. On the facade above the Kirchentors is a stone head, which Attila, intended to represent the king of the Huns.

The village is dominated by the built according to current appearance in 1827 Jerome Church ( Crkva Sv Župna. Jeronima ), and started from the 17th century 25 -meter-high free-standing bell tower of the antecedent church architecture from the 16th century. The high altar is adorned by the two marble statues of St. Jerome and St. Barnabas. The image of Mary behind the altar was made by Zorzi Ventura.

In the western district stands the church of St. Barnaba ( Crkva Sv. Barnabe ), a religious building from the 13th century. Its walls and apse were decorated to the middle of the 15th century with frescoes. These artworks disappeared at the beginning of the 18th century under an applied layer of mortar and were only released after renovation work several decades ago.

In the eastern district stands the church of St. John ( Crkva Sv. Ivana Krstitelja ), built in 1579 (and not, as noted at the gate, in 1593 ).
