Volvo 740

Volvo 744 (1984-1989)

The Volvo 740 is a passenger car of the upper middle class of the Swedish automaker Volvo. It was made from spring 1984 to mid-1992. The model designation " 740 " vehicles carry the Volvo 700 series with 4- cylinder petrol engines or 6- cylinder diesel engines.

The 700 models with higher-quality interior and exterior decoration with 6- cylinder turbo diesel or gasoline engines were designated Volvo 760 and have been since the beginning of 1982 on the market.

Genesis

The model 740 was built from April 1984 and was available with different engine. The unusually edgy body was designed by Jan Wilsgaard. It provoked in the USA the nickname "Swedish Bricks " ( Swedish bricks ). In Switzerland, the vehicle was given because of its extremely edgy front view soon the term " snow plow ".

The choice was between four-cylinder gasoline engines with carburetors, 2.3 liter displacement and 84 kW (114 hp) ( B230K ) or 83 kW ( 113 hp ) with fuel injection ( B230F ) and 96 kW ( 131 hp ) ( B23E ), a 4- cylinder gasoline engine with turbo charger with 2 liters capacity and 107 kW/145 hp ( B19ET ) and a 2.4 liter six-cylinder diesel engine without a turbocharger with an output of 60 kW ( 82 HP ) ( D24 ). The diesel engine has been used for model year 1979 in the 240 model series, produced by Volkswagen and used there also in the LT van. The engine is longitudinally mounted, the force is transmitted from the gearbox via a cardan shaft to a rigid rear axle.

The first wagon versions of the 740 were introduced in early 1985 and developed in the German-speaking world 's best-selling model of Volvo. As of spring 1985, the 740 sedan and the 740 combined were thus available.

While both versions outside the lettering wore 740, Volvo used internally, the designations 744 for the four-door model and 745 for the five-door.

Facelift

The 740 Series got a facelift for model year 1990 in the fall of 1989. The front of the 740 differed depending on the market and motorization ( front vertical with L- strips or appearance of the model 940).

The engines were developed over time; From model year 1987, all 740 models were also available in Germany with a regulated catalytic converter, the Volvo developed together with Bosch had (the world's first car with standard 3- way catalytic converter was 1975, the Volvo 164 on the U.S. market). The designation of these engines ended with the letter "F ", which marked them as injection engines with catalytic converters. The standard engine was called since then B230F, the turbo engine B230FT. Also "business " models with the engine B200F (2.0 liters) were offered on the German market. Carburettor engines were available until 1990 in some European countries. As diesel engines 2.4 -liter inline six-cylinder VW continued with turbocharger and 80 kW ( 109 hp ) and even in addition with intercooler and then 90 kW (122 hp) power at 760.

Because of the development of the series 850 and 900 of the construction of the Volvo 740 was phased out.

Direct successor to the 740 Series is the Volvo produced from mid-1990, 940, which is actually a comprehensively revised 740.

Parallel to type 940 but there was 1991-1992 as entry-level version continues the type 740, which looked exactly like a 740 from 1990. Beneath the bodywork almost have this 740 but already largely the art of type 940 Motorized this intermediate model with a gasoline engine B200F (2 liters) or B230F ( 2.3 liters).

The front of the vehicles is very similar to that of the 740 model year 1990, but the hood and the front fenders are the same as the 940 The rear of the sedan corresponds to the version of the Type 740 These vehicles were in turn marketed as " Business Edition ".
