The traditional classification of Volvo model names, after the final digits "60" or " 40 " stood for six respectively four-cylinder petrol engines, therefore was no longer since 1983. The 740 had besides weaker engines compared to the 760 also features a much simpler, eg, less chrome trim and a sunroof, alloy wheels and electric windows only at extra cost.

Rotational speed sensors on the wheels of detecting a spinning of the driven rear wheels and then control a reduction of engine power. The anti -lock braking system from Bosch was introduced in 1984.

For the model year 1987, the diesel engine D24T has been thoroughly revised and equipped with a different turbocharger, an intercooler and an oil cooler; through these and other measures now internally called D24TIC engine was first with 85 kW ( 115 hp) and later 90 kW ( 122 hp ) effective and powerful and robust.

In the fall of 1989, further changes were introduced, with the sedan got new tail lights. The technical and electrical equipment was partially brought forward to the progress of the upcoming 960 (including anti -lock braking system ). The six-cylinder models were there with the exception of 1982 and 1983 with only 3 1 automatic transmission, while all 760er manual transmission versions of the turbo petrol and turbo diesel models possessed a four-speed gearbox M46 with switchable overdrive.

In late summer 1990, the 760 replaced the 960 successor. A significant change was the replacement of the maxed- PRV engine, which was presented in the summer of 1974 with the Volvo 264. He was replaced by a Volvo alone developed 6- cylinder gasoline engine series. The appearance of the front of the model year 1988 has largely been taken for the Volvo 960. A stronger revision was made, however, in the region of the C - pillar and the rear end of the four-door.
