Vrgorac

Vrgorac ( German outdated Vergoraz ) is a city and a municipality in Croatia. It lies between the town of Imotski and the fertile Neretva valley. According to the 2011 census, the municipality has Vrgorac 6572, the town of 2,039 inhabitants.

Geography

Vrgorac is located in the Dalmatian hinterland directly behind the mountain Biokovo and is part of the Split- Dalmatia (Croatian Split-Dalmatia županija ). The city is connected by the D62 state road and the spectacular panoramic road D512 with Makarska (distance: 36 km ). Split is 98, Mostar 50 km away. Vrgorac situated on a mountain saddle at the edge of the fertile Vrgoračko Polje.

Economy

In the vicinity of Vrgorac is the largest asphalt mine in Europe. The Vrgoračko Polje is a large vineyard.

History

The old name Vrhgorac points to the location of the city back on a mountain. Was Vrgorac the Herzegovina part of the Ottoman Empire in 1483. In November 1690 it was conquered by the Venetians and Dalmatia affiliated, whose fate it shared from now on.

Attractions

At the church of the Annunciation a way leading up to the ruins of posts originating from the Middle Ages and later developed by the Ottomans castle begins. In the town itself there are seven Turkish defense towers. In the vicinity of the city one can find grave stones of the Bogomils.
