West Coast Line (Sweden)

The Västkustbana (West Coast Railway ) is a 290 km long railway line in Sweden between Gothenburg and Lund.

The route was created in 1888 as a single track connecting multiple related private railways and was nationalized in 1896.

Extension

Since 1985, the line is being expanded through two tracks in several phases, while it is realigned on longer sections. This expansion is indeed well advanced, but not yet completed. In 2008, the section is expanded to double track to 234 km, 56 km are still single track. The removed sections are traced out for a top speed of up to 250 km / h, but the train control system and the trains currently used only permit a speed of 200 km / h

The biggest missing expansion section is the distance over Hallandsås to be led through a tunnel. Begun in 1993 the Hallandsåstunnels was delayed by water leaks again and again and is expected to be completed by 2015. The breakthrough of the eastern tunnel was made in August 2010.

The Åsa station to be opened again in 2014.
