William L. Walsh

William Legh Walsh ( born January 28, 1857 in Simcoe, Ontario, † January 13th, 1938 Victoria, British Columbia) was a Canadian politician and judge. From 1931 to 1936 he was vice- governor of the province of Alberta.

Biography

The son of the House of Representatives Aquila Walsh first attended the city schools of Simcoe, then the University of Toronto, where he studied law. In 1880 he was admitted as a lawyer and practiced in Orangeville. In 1883 he married Bessie McVittie, he had with her ​​a daughter and a son. At the general election in 1896, he ran unsuccessfully in constituency Cardwell.

During the Klondike Gold Rush, Walsh moved to the Yukon Territory in 1900 and opened a law office in Dawson. In 1903 he was appointed Attorney-General. The following year Walsh was a candidate for the office of mayor of Dawson, but could not prevail against its competitors. Thereafter, he practiced his profession in Calgary. Walsh was in 1905 the first president of the Conservative Association of Alberta. For this party, he ran in 1906 in a special election for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, but again could not obtain enough votes. In 1911, he headed for the Conservatives the election campaign in the province of Alberta.

In 1912 Walsh's appointment as Judge of the Supreme Court of Alberta, he had held this office until 1931.
