Bud Olson

Horace Andrew " Bud " Olson, PC, AOE (* October 6, 1925 in Iddesleigh, Alberta; † 14 February 2002 in Medicine Hat, Alberta) was a Canadian politician. In 1957/58 and 1962 to 1972 he was a deputy in the lower house and belonged from 1968 to 1972 as Minister of Agriculture of the Government of Pierre Trudeau to. From 1977 to 1996 he was a senator, then to 2000, Vice Governor of the Province of Alberta.

Biography

Olson completed his schooling in his hometown Iddlesburg and later also in Medicine Hat. After that he worked as a farmer, businessman and rancher. In 1947 he married Marion Lucille McLachlan. With her he had four children later, he counted ten grandchildren.

His political career began in 1972, when he started in the constituency of Medicine took on the part of the Social Credit Party and was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1958 he lost his seat again, but in 1962 he again succeeded in gaining the House of Commons. Since the English wing of the Social Credit Party lost more and more important, changed Olson 1967 on the Liberal Party. A year later he was appointed Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau as Minister of Agriculture in the government; an office he held until 1972 when he lost the elections for the second time.

Trudeau called Olson on April 5, 1977 in the Canadian Senate. There he was between 1980 and 1982 Secretary of State for economic development and chairman of the appropriate Commission. Until 1984 he was also responsible for the Northern Pipeline Agency. From September 1982 to June 1984 Olson was president of the Government Group in the Senate. From 1991 to 1993 he chaired the Finance Committee of the Senate.

Just over a month after his resignation as Senator Olson was appointed on 17 April 1996 as Vice- Governor of the Province of Alberta. This office he held until February 10, 2000 after which he retired to Medicine Hat back. He died there on 14 February 2002 and was buried in the cemetery Hill Cemetery in Iddlesburgh.

Honors

In 1967, Olson Centennial Medal. From the College of Meidice If he was honored the following year for his civilian efforts in politics. From the Canadian Army in 1970 Olson was appointed honorary colonel. The Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal he received in 1977. Having his office as Lieutenant Governor of Alberta started in 1996, he received the Alberta Order of thus automatically Excellence, the Lieutenant Governor since 1971, each receives when he took office.
