Norman Kwong

Norman ( " normalization " ) Lim Kwong, CM, AOE ( born October 24, 1929 in Calgary, Alberta as Lim Kwong Yew, Chinese林佐 民, pinyin Lín Zuǒmín ) is a retired Canadian businessman, sports official and Canadian football player. As a four- time winner of the Grey Cup, he is one of the most successful players of the 1950s. Later he joined as a co-owner of the Hockey Teams Calgary Flames and as a manager of the football team Calgary Stampeders in appearance. From 2005 to 2010 Kwong was vice- governor of the province of Alberta.

Biography

Norman Kwongs parents had emigrated at the beginning of the 20th century from Taishan in Guangdong province, China to Canada. He attended Western Canada High School in Calgary, where he discovered his talent for Canadian Football. In 1948, he began his career in the Canadian Football League ( CFL), the first professional player of Chinese descent. The fullback was first with the Calgary Stampeders under contract, from 1951 until his retirement at the end of 1960 the Edmonton Eskimos.

In 13 seasons Kwong ( Nickname: The China Clipper ) scored a total of 78 touchdowns. Four times he won the Grey Cup, the Champions Trophy of the CFL in 1948 with the Stampeders and 1954, 1955 and 1956 with the Eskimos. Three more times he was in the final (1949, 1952, 1960). In the years 1951, 1955 and 1956, he received the Eddie James Memorial Trophy as the best offensive player in the league. 1955 and 1956, he was awarded as the best Canadian player in the CFL in 1955 as Canada's athlete of the year. In 1969, he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in November 2006, the television station The Sports Network chose him one of the top 50 CFL players of all time.

After his resignation in 1960, Kwong was successful in the Real Estate profession. In 1971, he appeared as a candidate of the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta at the elections to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, erected in the constituency of Calgary Millican but only the second best result. In 1980 he was a member of that group of businessmen who brought the NHL franchise Atlanta Flames to Calgary; to 1994 he was co-owner of the Calgary Flames. From 1988 to 1991 he was President and CEO of the Calgary Stampeders. He is one of the few people who also won both the Grey Cup as the Stanley Cup as a player, manager or owner.

On a proposal by Prime Minister Paul Martin Kwong was appointed by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson to Vice Governor of the Province of Alberta on January 20, 2005. He replaced Lois Hole, who had recently died two weeks in office. In this office represented as the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, at the provincial level. On 11 May 2010 he resigned.
