Wonsees is a market in the district of Kulmbach ( government district of Upper Franconia ) and a member of the administrative community Kasendorf. The place is located near the motorway A70 (junction 21 Schirradorf ).

History

1323 Wonsees was raised to market. The former Office of the Prussian principality since 1792 Bayreuth belonged since 1500 to the Frankish Empire circle. It was with this in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 to France and came to Bavaria in 1810. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community. Until 1972 Wonsees belonged to the defunct district Ebermannstadt.

Incorporations

On 1 January 1971 Kainach was incorporated, but ausgemeindet again already during the first half of 1972. On 1 July 1972, added Sanspareil. Schirradorf followed on 1 May 1978.

Market council

The market town council has 15 members, including the mayor. All members belong to the About -Party voter community. (As at municipal election on March 2, 2008)

Culture and sights

  • Zwernitz Castle, former headquarters of the Frankish Walpoten, was from 1338 to 1810 in the possession of the Hohenzollern. Directly below the castle is the
  • Sanspareil Rock Garden with bizarre rock formations and the Oriental Building.
  • Protestant parish church, formerly of St. Lawrence, with late Gothic tower and leg from the 16th century. The nave was built from 1725 to 1729. The church contains a magnificent pulpit altar by Johann Caspar Fischer, a pupil of Elias Räntz.
