Wrangell Island

Wrangell Iceland is an island in the Alexander Archipelago in the Alaska Panhandle. The island is about 48 km long and 8-23 km wide. Their land area is 544 km ². She is from the mainland only by a narrow channel, disconnected the Blake Channel.

History

The island is named after the Russian explorer and later governor of Russian America, Ferdinand von Wrangel, named. 1834 founded this on the island a warehouse 20 km north of the large Tlingit settlement Kotzlitzna, at the site of today's Wrangell, the only town on the island. The island thus is home to one of the oldest settlements in Alaska, which was not founded by natives.

Geography

Wrangell Iceland is located right in the mouth of the Stikine River and offers many recreational opportunities. It is heavily wooded and has lost nothing of its original wilderness. In addition to the single city (Wrangell ), there is only the small settlement Thoms Place on the island. Its population is 2,401 (as of 2000).
