Southeast Alaska

The Alaska Panhandle ( German as " Alaska Landzipfel ", literally "Alaska panhandle ", slang term referring to its characteristic elongated shape in relation to the northwest subsequent much larger land mass of the remaining - "actual" -. Alaska ) is the name located east of the 141 for a western degree of longitude, there on two sides by Canada surrounded coastline as part of the U.S. state of Alaska.

Geography

The Alaska Panhandle forms a narrow Pacific coastal belt, which is immediately adjacent to the Canadian province of British Columbia to the east. The border with Canada runs along the chain Elias and Coast Mountains. At the border is among other things the 4663 meter high Mount Fairweather, the highest mountain in British Columbia. The southern end of the Alaska Panhandle form the Dixon Entrance and Pearse Canal.

There are countless islands in the Alaska Panhandle (Alexander Archipelago) and fjords that extend partially over hundreds of kilometers into the country. The main islands are Admiralty Iceland, Iceland Baranof, Chichagof Iceland, Etolin Iceland, Iceland Kuiu, Kupreanof Iceland, Iceland Prince of Wales, Revillagigedo Iceland and Iceland Wrangell.

Known parks are the Glacier Bay National Park, Sitka National Historical Park and the Tongass National Forest.

Traffic

Accessible by road, only the towns Skagway (via the White Pass, also with a rail link to Whitehorse ) and Haines, at the time of the gold rush starting points for the legendary Chilkoot Trail. There (or in the more southern Canadian Prince Rupert ) can be switched to the plane or ferry through the Inside Passage.

Major cities are Juneau ( the capital of Alaska ), Sitka, Ketchikan, Wrangell and Petersburg.
