XML Information Set

XML Information Set ( Infoset) is a W3C standard with the status of a Recommendation.

The Infoset specification provides the basis for a number of other specifications, which have to make formal statements about the information content of XML documents.

A well-formed XML document has an "information set" The "information set" of such a document can have the following 11 types of information carriers ( "information items" ) included. :

  • The document
  • The elements
  • The attributes
  • The processing instructions ( "processing instructions" )
  • The unresolved references to entities
  • The individual letters
  • The comments
  • The document type declaration
  • The unprocessed references to entities
  • The notations
  • The namespace information

The currently valid second edition of the Infoset standard was adopted on 4 February 2004.
