Yevgeniy Arzhanov

Yevgeny Alexandrovich Arschanow (in Russian Евгений Александрович Аржанов, English transcription Yevgeniy Arzhanov, . Born April 22, 1948 in Kalush, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Soviet middle-distance runner, who specializes in the 800 -meter distance.

At the Olympic Games in 1968, Arschanow qualified for the semifinals, but then did not appear to. The European Athletics Championships 1969 in Athens, he was fourth in 1:47,1 min. In Vienna in 1970, he won at the first official European Indoor Championships in 1:51,0 min with almost one second ahead. A year later at the European Indoor Championships in Sofia, he had a winner in 1:48,7 min almost two seconds ahead. In the EM 1971 in Helsinki he won in 1:45,6 min with 0.4 seconds ahead of Dieter Fromm from the GDR.

In the final of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich Arschanow took over in the second round the top and lay up short of the target in the lead, ultimately he was defeated by the strong spurt Americans Dave Wottle by three hundredths of a second and received for 1:45,89 min silver. In 1973 he won in 1:46,88 minutes at the Universiade.

1970, 1971 and 1973 won Arschanow the Soviet Championship title. His personal best time of 1:45,3 min he ran on August 17, 1972 with a sporting event in Moscow.
