Zambian general election, 2006

The 2006 elections in Zambia were held on September 28. The most promising candidates were incumbent President Levy Mwanawasa of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, which was dug again, Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front and Haikainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development.

Electioneering

Sata was critical to the investment of China and said that he would recognize the Republic of China ( Taiwan). An opinion poll in September gave a Sata ahead of Mwanawasa of 52 to 27 percent and gave Hichilema a third place with 20 percent. Mwanawasa called this survey tendentious. An earlier survey gave Mwanawasa 33 before Sata 24 percent. But this survey signaled for a loss of 45 Mwanawasa and Sata for a gain of 15 percent compared to a survey conducted in August. Of the former president Kenneth Kaunda called for Hichilema and advised by Sata, while Frederick Chiluba urged voters to vote for Sata.

The possibility existed that Sata could be excluded from the presidential election because he had allegedly made false statements in its filings. This was an attempt gewerte Mwanawasa to make Sata 's candidacy impossible.

There were two other candidates, Godfry Miyanda and Kenny Ngongo.

To the parliamentary seats to candidates competed for 709 (603 men and 106 women = 85 % = 15 %) who had each paid about 100 € for registration. They belonged to a total of 13 political parties or electoral alliances or participated as Independent (157 ) participated in the election. Election results

The winner of the election was the candidate who could unite the most votes. It was a simple majority vote. Initial projections saw Sata the lead, but the end result turned Mwanawasa as the winner determined and offset Sata into third place. Intermediate results, which were published after the count of 120 of 150 constituencies, gave Mwanawasa 42 before Haikainda Hichilema with 28 and Sata with 27 percent.
