Mode

According to the UEFA five year ranking two teams were set for the group stage from England, Italy and Spain; two more started in the 3rd qualifying round. Holders FC Liverpool launched additionally as the fifth English team in the first qualifying round (see: " Lex Liverpool "). From Germany, France and Portugal ( places 4-6 UEFA five year ranking ) two teams were also set for the group stage, but only ever one team competed in the third qualifying round. For Greece, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, and (seats 7-9 ), a team for the group stage was set and each one started in the third qualifying round. The Master from Turkey ( 10th ) moved from the third qualifying round for the group stage, since the set actually for this title holders Liverpool FC competed in the first qualifying round. The second Turkish team started as planned in the second qualifying round. Belgium, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland and the Ukraine (seats 11-15 ) sent one team each in the 2nd and one team in the third qualifying round.

In the game mode, there were no changes compared to the previous season. In the group stage as previously considered the following case of a tie between two teams:

" Lex Liverpool"

As defending champions Liverpool FC was not qualified as a fifth of the English Premier League for the Champions League, and the English FA FA refused, the fourth-placed Everton to favor the CL start right from Liverpool to escape, UEFA decreed an exception, with the Liverpool allowed to compete in additional qualifying round 1 to obtain the possibility of title defense. Thus, the first and only time in the history of the Champions League turned a nation of five participants.

Six years earlier, it had already given the same situation in Spain: While Real Madrid won the Champions League, came in the Spanish league only in 5th place, and would therefore only be allowed to play in the UEFA Cup. However, the Spanish Federation RFEF withdrew the fourth-placed Real Zaragoza, the CL- Start right, and clearing the way for Madrid free to take the place of the defending champions in the Champions League. Zaragoza had to make do with the UEFA Cup against.

Since the statutes did even then, allow no more than four participants per nation in the Champions League, Liverpool was titled not as English, but as a "European " club, so the rule is that two teams of a nation should not meet before the second round, was undermined. Nevertheless, the game results were included in the five- year ranking for England. Prompt Liverpool was solved at the group draw with league rival Chelsea in a group, both comparisons ended goalless.

This exception was not free of controversy. Both in the fact that England now had five teams in the top European league, but to let the decision to Liverpool play through the qualification, you saw a distortion of competition. The qualification opponents of the English had no chance against the strong play defending champion, while you would have normally more equal opponents, and thus a greater chance to qualify for the next rounds. For the following period, the UEFA clarified its regulations to the effect that a defending champion is set in each case for the main round, no matter how he fares in his league.
