The German Elfriede Wever, who sat down shortly after takeoff with Dollinger to the top, was ninth. Gentzel lay half with 64.2 seconds in front, but was 100 meters later overtaken by Radke. Strongly exaggerated press reports of alleged exhausted collapsed athletes were used as an excuse to take the 800 - meter race of women from the Olympic program. Only in 1960 he was re-introduced.
