History

After 1937-1973 already AHL Hockey was and 1976-1978 NHL hockey played under the name of Baron in Cleveland, an AHL franchise, the decision was made there in the new century to resettle. For this reason, the brothers George and Gordon Gund purchased in 2001 the partnership rights of Kentucky Thoroughblades who were based in Lexington, Kentucky. The new owners hoped by moving a circle, whereby the choice of name played an important role. At the start of the 2001/02 season the Barons then for almost 30 years started for the first time in an AHL season.

During the period of its existence, the Barons were the farm team of the NHL team San Jose Sharks. In addition, they worked with the Fresno Falcons, Toledo Storm ( ECHL both ) and the Youngstown Steel Hounds (CHL ) together. They succeeded, however, to reach the play -offs only once in five seasons. There, however, they lost in the first round of the Hamilton Bulldogs.

For the 2006/07 season, the Barons were moved by the Sharks to Worcester, Massachusetts, and her nickname adapted to that of the NHL teams. For the 2007 /08 season, the Lake Erie Monsters, which are located in Cleveland, take the place of the Barons and be the farm team of the Colorado Avalanche.
