Lagonegro

Lagonegro is a municipality in Basilicata in the province of Potenza with 5685 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012 ).

Neighboring towns are Casalbuono (SA), Casaletto Spartano (SA), Lauria, Moliterno, Montesano sulla Marcellana (SA), Nemoli and Rivello.

History

Lagonegro was part of the county Lauria and was owned by the powerful Sanseverino family. 1463 married Venceslaus Sanseverino, who had no male heirs, his daughter Luisa was the cousin of Barnabas Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno. As a result of the rebellion of Guglielmo Sanseverino Lagonegro came to Gasparo Siracusa ( Siracusa family ), a close confidant of King Frederick. The city was later sold by his daughter Johanna to the Carafa family. The legend says is buried in Lagonegro Mona Lisa.

Demography

Lagonero counts 2,177 households. Between 1991 and 2001, the population fell slightly from 6,260 to 6,146. This corresponds to a percentage decrease of 1.8%.
