Rapolla

Rapolla is an Italian town in the province of Potenza in Basilicata.

Location and data

Rapolla located 50 km north of Potenza. Here live 4400 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012). The community is a member of the Comunità Montana del Vulture and the Associazione Nazionale Città del Vino. The neighboring municipalities are Barile, Lavello, Melfi, Rionero in Vulture and Venosa.

History

The Romans founded the town. At that time he was called Strapellum. Towards the end of the 10th century were Greek monks settled here from Sicily. The monastic foundation of Vitalis is after the translation of the saints around the middle of the 11th century no longer detectable. Coat of arms

A Renaissance shield with green board carries a split in gold and silver box and shows two rotgezungte writhing snakes. About the shield floats a mural crown with five towers that are crowned with three wälchen battlements.

Is surrounding the shield with an olive branch on the right side and on the other by a fuchttragenden laurel. Both branches tied by a ribbon in the national colors.

Attractions

With the construction of the cathedral was begun in 1209, and in 1253 it was completed. The church of Santa Lucia was up to the consecration of the Cathedral of the Episcopal Church of Rapolla.
