Marsico Nuovo

Marsico Nuovo is an Italian town in the province of Potenza, in the Basilicata. It is located above the valley of the River Agri.

Location and data

Marsico Nuovo is located 46 km south of Potenza in the Valley of Agri. Here live 4267 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012). The districts are pergola, Galaino, Camporeale and Calabritto. The neighboring municipalities are Abriola, Brienza, Calvello, Marsicovetere, Padula (SA), Paterno, Sala Consilina (SA) and Sasso di Castalda.

The inhabitants live almost exclusively on agriculture. Grown fruits and vegetables.

History

The period of the birth of the village is unknown, but it is before the 12th century. There was already in Roman times, settlers in the area. Died in 1656 half the population of the plague. 1857 parts of the city was destroyed by an earthquake.

Attractions

The San Gianuario church has an unusual Romanesque portal for the area. The origin of the church dates from the 11th century. Another beautiful church is the church of San Michele Arcangelo. The structure of the church is similar to the San Gianuario church. The location of the cathedral was built to 1121. The church was built in the 7th century in a fire in 1809 severely damaged and up to 1833 again. Next interest Doge is Arcivescovile.
