Mönkeberg

Mönkeberg is a municipality in the district of Plön, in Schleswig- Holstein to the Kiel Fjord.

History

Mönkeberg is first mentioned in the 13th century. By the end of the 19th century it remained a farming village with less than 200 inhabitants. Then came an influx of workers and employees of the evolving Kiel shipyard industry as well as by members of the Navy of the Empire naval port of Kiel. 1908 was a solid road to Kiel and in 1914 it was connected to the power grid. In the 1930s, underground oil tanks were built for refueling of warships in Mönkeberg, which made the area during World War II as one of the main targets of the Allied air attacks. 95 percent of all buildings were destroyed at the war's end. After the reconstruction, the pros and city character of the place increased.

Policy

The municipal council consists of 17 members. The municipal election in 2013 resulted in seven seats for the SPD, while the CDU and the voter community UWG reached five seats.

Sports

There are Mönkeberg in the sports club SV Mönkeberg of 1910 eV with the divisions Judo, Trimmdich (men aged 50 and over ), archery, football (men from 32 years ), gymnastics, tennis and handball. The club was founded under the name fistball Club Young Mönkeberg and was a member of the pre-1933 Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association.

Furthermore, there is a marina the nautical association Mönkeberg. This was built by the club mostly in their own work. The club has a youth department and a fleet of dinghies for the sail training.

Others

The town's landmark is a great beacon, first of wood, then of steel from the 1880s up to the 1980s was the Hauptbake a whole ensemble of beacons in the municipality of Mönkeberg. This could be used by passing vessels for compensating the magnetic compasses. The Hauptbake was allowed to stand as a landmark and stylized in the municipal coat of arms recorded.

The community has its own primary school ( elementary school to the beacon ) and a volunteer fire department.

During the summer months Mönkeberg is served by the ferries of the drag - and Kiel ferry company on the route between Kiel and beaches.

From 1935 to 1945 there was a military railroad from Dietrichsdorf for naval oil storage Mönkeberg. On this route reversed a DWK -Lok type V 36 and a Köf II Today, the web is still the route identified.

Personalities

1964 denied the speedway driver Egon Müller in his first race in Mönkeberg without a license. The handball player Frank Dahmke comes from Mönkeberg.
