Robert H. Nugen

Robert Hunter Nugen (* July 16 1809 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, † February 28, 1872 in Newcomerstown, Ohio ) was an American politician. Between 1861 and 1863 he represented the state of Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1811 Robert Nugen came with his parents in the Columbiana County in Ohio. He received only a limited education. Since 1828, he lived in Tuscarawas County, where he worked in agriculture. He also worked as an entrepreneur. He has held several local offices and was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1860 he attended the Democratic National Convention in Charleston in part, on which the delegates could not agree on a presidential candidate.

In the congressional elections of 1860 Nugen in the 15th electoral district of Ohio was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of the Republican William Helmick on March 4, 1861. Until March 3, 1863, he was able to complete a term in Congress. This was marked by the events of the Civil War. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives to Nugen withdrew from politics. He lived in Newcomerstown, where he was head of the administration of the Ohio Canal. He continued in this position until his death on 28 February 1872.
