Due to the pile-up at the race in 1973 had meanwhile a chicane integrated into the route to reduce the velocities in the Woodcote curve. This is also carried the new security efforts into account that have been raised since the tragic events at the Grand Prix of Spain 1975.

Graham Hill, who was no longer competed since his non- qualifying Grand Prix of Monaco, proclaimed in front of a home crowd, the final end of his racing career and turned to the delight of the spectators a farewell round. With 175 GP starts, he was at the time record holder.

Jacky Ickx had left the Lotus factory team due to persistent failure. Team boss Colin Chapman reported then three copies of the outdated Lotus 72 for the race, which he occupied in addition to regular driver Ronnie Peterson with the two debutants Brian Henton and Jim Crawford, which thus both were given the chance to recommend by a good performance as the successor of Ickx.

The following example of Lotus, March also brought a third works car at the start. This was driven by Hans -Joachim Stuck, who thus returned to Formula 1 after several months of interruption. Due to lack of competitiveness of own construction PC1, the Penske team, a team driver Mark Donohue decided to leave henceforth begin with a March - customer vehicle. A total of four cars of the type March 751 were thus registered for the competition.

John Surtees also grew its team for the home Grand Prix at an additional car, which he occupied with the debutant Dave Morgan, who played his only Grand Prix this weekend. Roelof Wunderink returned to the Ensign team, where was abandoned shortly to a also planned use of a second car with Gijs van Lennep at the wheel.

Contrary to the general trend of the British team to provide an extra car available for the home race, Frank Williams had to reduce his team to only one vehicle because he did not have a sufficient number of engines.

The sporadic antretenden teams Lyncar and Maki completed the participants.

Race

Shortly after the start, the first-time instead of the tilted by the race director to date national flag by a set of traffic lights, Pace took the lead before Pryce, Regazzoni, Lauda and Hunt started very well. This was overtaken during the following rounds again of Scheckter and Fittipaldi.

In the tenth round Pryce was overtaken by Regazzoni. This shortly afterwards assumed the leadership of Pace, who later fell back slightly behind Pryce.

When it started to rain in the 19th round, the Leading Regazzoni spun in the club curve and thereby damaged his rear wing. Due to the resulting need pit stops he lost the lead to Pryce, but the two laps later also crashed. This came Scheckter, who had overtaken the meantime Lauda and Pace, in the top position. Pace regained the lead, raise as Scheckter little later in the box wet tires allowed. Lauda had twice the pits, as a wheel nut was not tightened correctly on the first try during a tire change.

The driver of the decision that had changed to rain tires, proved in the following rounds as properly because Scheckter lost due to pit stop places against the continued driving on slicks competitors Pace, Fittipaldi, Hunt and Mass quickly recaptured again. However, when the track dried again in the second half of the race, another stop was necessary, thereby Hunt came into the leadership position. However, its engine gradually lost power on, so Fittipaldi was able to take the lead on lap 43. On the second and third place followed by Pace and Scheckter.

In the course of the 55th round of the rain returned in the form of a violent shudder. Jean -Pierre Jarier was the first driver, who retired due to hydroplaning. During the following circulation this happened eleven other pilots, with Carlos Pace, Jody Scheckter, James Hunt, Brian Henton, Dave Morgan, Tony Brise, John Nicholson and Wilson Fittipaldi each in the club curve came off the track, and Patrick Depailler, Mark Donohue and John Watson in the area of Stowe.

The race was then stopped with the red flag after 56 of the planned 67 laps. For the determination of the final result, however, they moved the zoom level at the beginning of the 56th round, making the injured during the 56th round of pilots were each evaluated at the positions where they had lain before their departure. Of the first six drivers in the rankings at the time of the crash were racing only the winner Emerson Fittipaldi and the sixth-placed Vittorio Brambilla still in the race and crossed the finish line.

The Scuderia Ferrari presented a protest against the result, since the two works cars of the teams had regularly achieved each with two laps behind the finish line and were still counted with their previously occupied positions. Had the injured in the 56th round competitors were seen as " Eliminated ", the two Ferrari had the third and sixth occupied and thus get championship points. Three days later, rejected the appeal, however, the RAC and confirmed the existing race result. It was Emerson Fittipaldi's 14th and final Grand Prix victory.
