Background

For the Canadian Grand Prix, which was held penultimate race of the season, which is already fixed as world champion Niki Lauda did not occur to. Instead took over Gilles Villeneuve, who as Lauda's successor was clear from the 1978 season anyway, the second Ferrari cockpit already during his home Grand Prix. It was originally planned to use a third works car for Villeneuve, which was superseded by Lauda's non-participation.

Riccardo Patrese returned to the Shadow team, which Jean -Pierre Jarier, who had represented him at the U.S. Grand Prix at the weekend before, no free cockpit had available.

Further changes in the driver's field found in the week between the two races on the North American continent not take place.

Training

In the run was discussed the potential security threat by the numerous bumps the track. During training, it was found that this concern was well justified, because Ian Ashley rolled over with his Hesketh 308 after crossing one of the dreaded bumps. The car flew over the crash barriers and Ashley suffered serious injuries. Race

Andretti took the lead before Hunt and measure. This sequence of the first three remained constant during the first 60 rounds of the race. Only the distance to the third-place mass increased significantly.

Alan Jones finished in fourth place ahead of Patrick Tambay. Brambilla was considered a sixth because of his late failure.

The podium of Jochen Mass was the last of a German driver Michael Schumacher up to third place in the Grand Prix of Mexico in 1992.
