Background
Since ATS, RAM and some other small teams had decided not to participate in the final flyaway races, the entry list for the U.S. Grand Prix with 27 pilots was relatively clear, so that the question of a possible pre-qualification is not presented.
The only increase was carried out by the local private team Interscope, which reported a Penske PC4 for the Formula 1 newcomer Danny Ongais.
Jean -Pierre Jarier could be exempt from its ATS contract to represent Riccardo Patrese at Shadow, as it participated in a parallel event Formula 2 race in Italy.
After the Scuderia Ferrari had announced that Niki Lauda will be replaced from the following season by Gilles Villeneuve, because of disputes was not clear whether Lauda, who previously was three weeks as world champion since the Italian Grand Prix, would finish the season at all. The Team Lotus also announced already that they had Ronnie Peterson taken as successor by Gunnar Nilsson for the 1978 season under contract.
Training
James Hunt, with the McLaren M26 become just as good results achieved as with the M23 in the previous year, the pole position secured before Hans -Joachim Stuck, who showed a strong performance in the Brabham BT45 training. His teammate John Watson completed in third a good qualifying result for the Brabham team. Mario Andretti qualified in the Lotus 78 for the fourth place ahead of Ronnie Peterson Tyrrell P34 and Carlos Reutemann in the Ferrari 312T2.
Race
On a damp track Watson risked only one of the top pilots a start on slicks, with the result that he fell back within a short time until the end of the field. Meanwhile, took over his teammate Stuck the lead ahead of Hunt, Andretti, Reutemann, Peterson, Lauda and Jody Scheckter. The South Africans took place during the following rounds his way past three competitors.
After lying still in the lead Stuck filmed in lap 14 due to a clutch damage from behind. He could not continue the race. The sequence at the top with Hunt before Andretti, Scheckter and Lauda made thereby changed then to the finish no longer. Clay Regazzoni overtook lap 23 Reutemann, reaching fifth place.
