1979 Gulf Cup of Nations
The fifth edition of the Gulf Cup was held from 23 March to 9 April 1979 in the Iraqi capital Baghdad instead. The winner was the host of Iraq.
Organizer
The tournament was originally supposed to take place in 1978 in Dubai, but due to financial difficulties gave the Emirates to Iraq from the tournament.

The seven teams were all against each other, the team with the most points won the tournament, should after six games between the two teams prevail point equality, had to find the winner of a play-off. Direct comparison and goal difference did not apply.
